Ages: 7-12

Lesson Objective:

What are our students passionate about? What makes them happy? What are their hopes and dreams? A vision board is a visualization tool. It is a board of any sort used to build a collage of words and pictures that represent goals and dreams.

This lesson allows children to explore ideas of what they love and enjoy now and what they want to love and enjoy in the future. It prepares them for future lessons on how to make dreams and hopes more tangible.

Group Meeting:

Gather your group to the meeting area and have them take a seat.

1. Introduce the lesson by discussing how at this point we are getting to know ourselves and one another better.
2. Ask the students if they’ve ever created a collage before, or if they know what that is. If needed, explain that a collage is a variety of pictures glued onto paper or a poster that helps describe something.
3. Explain that today we are making collages about ourselves, but that the things we’re describing aren’t simply just our favorite color or food. Instead, these collages will help us understand what we currently like and what we would like to have happen in the future.

Summary of Tasks/Activity:

Vision Boards for Kids

1. Show the kids how to split their posters into four sections: DO, GO, BE, and LOVE.
2. Have the kids go through the magazines and cut out any pictures that motivate them or make them feel ambitious.
   1. Do: What do you want to do this summer? What do you enjoy doing? What would you like to learn to do?
   2. Go: Where do you dream of going? Where have you already been? What’s your favorite place to visit? How will you get there?
   3. Be: What do you want to be when you grow up? What kind of person do you want to be? (Help them find photos of smiling faces, people helping others, etc.)
   4. Love: Who do you love? Family? Pets? What makes you feel loved?
3. Help them avoid filling their board with toys and material possessions. Ask or instruct students to place their vision boards in their room to serve as a daily reminder of their goals.

Materials/Equipment:

• Large pieces of construction paper or poster board

• Old magazines, Internet pictures, pamphlets, etc. (Libraries often give away outdated magazines for free) 
• Glue or other adhesive
• Scissors
• Markers
• Crayons 
• Colored pencils
