A great “getting-to-know-you” exercise for children’s programming. Kids learn what makes them different and how they have more in common than they may realize.
Group Meeting:
Gather the kids in a circle and have them state their names.
Pass around a bowl with the getting-to-know-you questions on folded slips of paper. Each kid picks one question, but if they don’t like their question they can pick a new one.
Challenge the kids to get into groups of four and count down so it gives them a sense of urgency.
When the kids find their group, have them ask each other the questions they have picked.
When they are finished, have them find a group of three and repeat, and then finally groups of two. Encourage the kids to pair up with someone they don’t know very well.
Summary of Tasks/Activity:
What We Have in Common!
Once the children are in pairs, pass out the Venn diagram sheet. Have each child put their name on top of each circle. The challenge for the kids is to find at least three things they have in common and three things that make them different.
If children are having a hard time thinking of topics, tell them to refer to the “getting-to-know-you” questions from earlier and see how their answers are the same or different.
Afterward, have the worksheets with the outline of a body ready to color and have the kids draw their partner.
Getting-to-know-you questions:
What is the best kind of pizza?
Do you like cake or ice cream better?
What makes you the happiest?
If you were an ice cream flavor, what flavor would you be?
