Ask the Staff: Jessica
We are continuing our “Ask the Staff” blog series, this time featuring Jessica Smith!
So what do you do at the Drew Lewis Foundation?
I am the Sustainability and Expansion VISTA here at the Drew Lewis Foundation. I work to sustain our programs by acquiring funds through grants and fundraisers and am supporting our RISE Expansion project efforts.
What brought you to the Drew Lewis Foundation? Why did you choose nonprofit work?
I recently graduated with my Master’s in Social Psychology. I chose that education path because I have a passion for nonprofit work and making lasting change in my community. When I heard of the Drew Lewis Foundation, I immediately knew I wanted to be a part of the work here, and this VISTA position opened the door to that opportunity.
What is your favorite part about DLF?
DLF’s mission and commitment to our community is inspiring. The staff themselves are also one of my favorite parts. They are genuine, kind, and motivational and I’m blessed to be working with them.
What kind of stuff are you listening to? This can include music, podcasts, whatever!
One of my all-time favorite musical artists is Gregory Alan Isakov, a perfect listen for rainy spring afternoons.
What kind of stuff are you reading? Books, news, that sort of thing?
I just finished reading Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. It’s now one of my favorite books! I am currently reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab.
What are you watching? This could be shows, movies, YouTube videos/series, TikToks, the paint drying on your favorite wall, etc.
I constantly have “The Office,” “Schitt’s Creek,” and “The Vampire Diaries” on a loop. Binging TV series is a special talent of mine.
What are some of your favorite hobbies or activities to do outside of work?
Apart from reading and watching my favorite series, I recently tried my hand at gardening (which did not end well). I also enjoy spending time with friends, going hiking, and hanging out with my Corgi, Wilbur.
What are you eating? This could be favorite meals to cook, favorite snacks, etc.
Mexican food is my bread and butter; if I’m making/eating something, it’s usually a variation of a Mexican dish.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A lot can change between now and 2031. I see myself continuing to be in nonprofit work, and I’m excited to see how much I learn and grow!
